Traveling by train in Morocco is the most efficient and practical way to get around. The rail network in Morocco is not very extensive, but most of the main tourist destinations are covered. Trains run between Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca (including the international airport), Rabat, Oujda, Tangier, and Meknes. If you want to go to the desert, the Atlas Mountains, Agadir or Essaouira on the coast, you must take a bus, a rental car or a large taxi to your destination.
Booking your Morocco Rail ticket
You cannot make a reservation or buy a train ticket outside of Morocco. However, once there, go to the nearest station and you can make reservations and buy tickets anywhere in the country. Trains run often and it’s usually not a problem to book just a day or two before your trip.
If you are traveling from Tangier to Marrakech and want to take the night train, all you have to do is hope that the deckchairs are not full. If they are full, don’t panic, there is almost always a second class place so you don’t have to stay in Tangier if you don’t want to.
Some hotel owners may be nice enough to book your lounge chair in advance, and ONCF (railway) will have your tickets at the station. However, it is quite complicated for the hotel owner and financial risk (if you do not show up). However, if you are very stressed about this stage of your trip, send an email to the owner of your hotel in Marrakech and see what he can do.
First-class or second?
Trains in Morocco are divided into compartments, in the first class, there are 6 people per compartment, in the second class there are 8 people per compartment. When you book in first class, you can get an actual seat reservation. This is useful if you want a seat near the window because the scenery is beautiful. Otherwise, it’s first come, first served, but trains are rarely full, so you always feel comfortable enough. The price difference between the two classes usually does not exceed 15 USD.
