ONCF has requested 30 new electric motors for 1.5 billion dirhams ($ 157 million) from international rail company Alstom and plans to receive two or three engines per month in the coming months.

The national rail company received a 40-year loan from the French government at a favorable interest rate of 0.0016% for the purchase of new locomotives. The loan includes a 10-year grace period, according to the MAP.

The engines will be able to transport many cars from the PSA Group plant in Kenitra, north of Rabat, to the main port of Tangier. An press release from ONCF explained that the electric motors will be used to transport containers from Tangier Med to Casablanca.

ONCF also plans for future acquisitions of self-propelled trains and notes an increase in demand for transportation services in its press release.

ONCF also completed several projects in 2018 to increase capacity, add more lanes in Casablanca to save space in congested stations, add a second lane from Casablanca to Marrakech and double the three lanes of Casablanca-Kenitra.

Alstom has a manufacturing plant in Fez and an office in Casablanca.

The Moroccan Railways Company (ONCF) announced that the journey time between Marrakech and Casablanca will decrease to two hours and 15 minutes, due to the duplication of the original train line.
