Morocco SIM cards

Morocco SIM cards : no connection and no internet!

Morocco SIM cards: When traveling, it is always important not to be disconnected, but how to do it in Morocco, which is not part of the normal European call tariff area? You can also pay 3 euros per minute for a call to Lithuania, the price of the message is about 0.50 ct. You can always make calls using Skype or WhatsApp, but what to do without the Internet?

I advise you to buy a Moroccan phone SIM card.

  • The most popular mobile operators in Morocco are Maroc Telecom, Orange (formerly Méditel), and Inwi.
  • All operators offer similar things, I have tried Inwi, Orange, and Maroc Telecom, I would recommend the latter. Maroc Telecom is the largest operator in Morocco, you can easily buy a supplement everywhere.
  • When purchasing any SIM card, you must present your passport, which will be scanned or photographed. This is apparently done to prevent phone fraud, spyware, etc.
  • Since your Moroccan phone number will be linked to your passport, I do not recommend passing the card on to others. In case of theft, lock the SIM card immediately.
  •  The Maroc Telecom SIM card costs 30 DH (about 3 euros), depending on the promotion, you will also receive a gift. Here, along with the number, I got 1 GB of free internet and unrealistically many local calls. Everything is valid for a week, after which you have to fill in yourself.

  • You can buy SIM cards in many places, you will even see vendors on the street. However, being paranoid, I don’t like to give my passport data to anyone, even though I know it’s official and harmless. That’s why I choose real mobile operator salons. You will definitely find them at airports, train stations (at least Marrakech), etc.
  • You must activate the SIM card after you have purchased it. Either ask the salon to do this or call 555 yourself and dial the number “1”. Everything, the card is activated.
  • You can buy the supplement in most small shops or supermarkets. When you fill-up with 50 DH, you get about 4GB of internet, local calls, and messages.
  • Erase the protection and enter the refill code according to the instructions. Phone card replenished!
  • Some smaller stores will not give you a card when you request a top-up. The seller will ask for your phone number and will top up your credit with your phone. Don’t be afraid, it won’t really scam and you’ll get a confirmation message on your phone in minutes.
  • All phone operators have different plans for calls and the Internet, so when filling in it is necessary to INDICATE what you want – only Internet or chat. Ask the seller to help you. If you just enter the numbers, you can only make calls and vice versa.
  • Phone operators love to send a lot of SMS messages with offers, so don’t be surprised to receive Arabic / French information with news and promotions on a daily basis.
  • At Marrakech Menara Airport, I saw that Inwi was distributing SIM cards for free. However, you will still need to present your passport.
  • Mobile communication is not working well in all parts of Morocco. Especially if you drive through mountainous areas or by the ocean. In Essaouira, for example, my Inwi connection worked and my friend Maroc Telecom didn’t work. Agadir – vice versa.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available at Moroccan airports. Also on the bus from the airport to the city and other new model Marrakech city buses.
